Main points
- Access to National Health Service (No private policy req’d)

Tax benefits
Financial qualifying criteria, upon application/renewal points:
- Recommended cash balance of €10,000 for main applicant + €5,000 per spouse in a Portuguese
bank account upon application (€3,000 per other dependent) - Preferable to be in combination with proof of receipt of another passive source such as pension,
investment or rental income to strengthen application.
Or - Approx proof of £200,000 cash in bank continually generating interest, upon application or
renewal points. (this is self generating, to meet income requirement so must be untouched or
combined with other source if falls below min level to generate minimum income) - Preferable to be in combination with another passive source such as pension, investment or
rental income to strengthen application.
Or - Or a combination of the above to equate to the minimum requirement of €8.460 per year + 30%
for a spouse (approx €2,538) totalling =.€10,998 PA or €916 PM.
However, see ‘recommended’ minimum level of €10,000 per person or €15,000 per couple /
€1,250 PM to strengthen application.

Accommodation qualifying application points;
- 12 month plot/rental contract
- Or min 30 day hotel reservation upon application
Application process;
- Make application to consulate in country of residence (London, UK)
- Complete application at Border services in Portugal
- Renewal points year 2 and 4. At year 5 you qualify to apply for Permanent residency and take a
basic language test.

Qualifying stay lengths;
- Year 1 and 2 = 6 consecutive months or 8 non consecutive months
- Year 3,4,5 = 6 consecutive months or 8 non consecutive months – If adhered to for 5 years, option
to qualify for Permanent Residency or Citizenship.
Benefits;
- Option to apply for NHR (Non Habitual Resident) tax regime for world wide income (Generally
preferable to UK Citizens) - Gain Freedom of Movement throughout 26 Schengen Zone countries. (Must adhere to the
minimum stay period for the 5 year temporary resident permit period)
