After living through weeks of lockdown, we all feel like a treat. And for most of us, that means the annual two-week break in the sun. Currently, the FCO has banned all non-essential travel, but the picture is rapidly changing across Europe. Tourist hotspots such as Spain and France are giving British holidaymakers hope that they may soon be heading for the Costas or the Cote d’Azur.
No one knows exactly when tourists will be able to return to their favourite destinations again. But with some hotspots anxious to see the return of the Brits to their resorts and holiday homes, there are some glimmers that we could all be enjoying a holiday in July and August if restrictions are eased and we continue to observe social distancing and hygiene rules.
Spain
British tourists can return to Spain in July. Flights are now scheduled and available for booking!
Portugal
With a far lower number of coronavirus cases than its Spanish neighbour, Portugal looks well placed to welcome back visitors. The Algarve was one of the least affected areas in Europe and a third of the region’s hotels are already open. Restaurants, golf courses and car hire are all reopening but it’s still unclear when international visitors will be allowed back.
Italy
One of the hardest-hit countries in Europe, Italy is due to reopen cafes and bars in June. The National Tourist Board has said that tourists from the European Union will be welcome in July and August. In the event of a spike in cases, lockdown measures will be reinstituted and borders closed.
Greece
Greece is actively welcoming British holidaymakers and is positive that the season will begin in July. After a swift lockdown, Greece was one of the most successful countries in controlling the virus and is confident that Brits will want to escape for some sun, sea and ouzo. Hotels are due to reopen soon and the season could be extended until November to cope with expected demand.
France
France has some of the strictest guidelines on international travel, with a 14 days quarantine period in place. But UK travellers could be returning to their holiday homes thanks to an exemption when travelling to and returning from France. Cafes and restaurants are set to reopen in green areas in the west of the country by early June.
Turkey
Travellers wanting to enjoy the delights of Turkey may have to wait a little longer. While life there is slowly getting back to normal, travellers from European countries including Britain may not be allowed to enter the country until July at the earliest.
Bulgaria
Bulgaria’s sunny beaches have become a firm favourite with cost-conscious Brits and resorts are expected to open again from the beginning of July. To tempt tourists, free sun loungers and sunbeds will be on offer when the resorts open for business again.
Before you travel, check the latest FCO information. Currently, non-essential travel is banned but that is subject to change and you could soon be booking your dream holiday in your favourite resort.
